PROF. BENJAMIN HOWARD RAND POSTCARD

In the late nineteenth century, professional fields for men expanded. Benjamin Rand, a Professor at Jefferson Medical College, represents this growing professional class. Rand is lost in thought at his desk, which is cluttered with scientific instruments and personal items, including a flower and a bowtie. Absently petting his cat, Rand is poised between the world of intellect and the comforts of home.

The portrait won Thomas Eakins a place at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial’s international art exhibition, where it won critical acclaim.
